Mahalo to all our working families for everything they did to make our community the wonderful and safe place that it is. |
Here in Hawai'i, we have a rich history of appreciation for how much working class families have done to contribute to our community and our economy. Long before law school and politics, I spent summers as a young man working at the cannery along with four of my brothers and sisters. Like many of my generation that grew up in Hawai'i, working at the pineapple cannery was a staple, and I bet most of us remember exactly how much we made too - I made $3.35 an hour!
Many of our ancestors worked on the plantation fields of Hawai'i or helping to build the harbors that we rely on so much today. It was many of those ancestors, who fought to ensure that all workers would have basic rights we often take as a given today.
I just wanted to take a moment today to thank all of our working families for everything you do to make our community the wonderful and safe place that it is. Wishing everyone a happy and safe labor day weekend!
Together, we are one. IMUA!
